What is Hakone known for?
Hakone, Japan, is a mountain town in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park that's famed for its hot springs, panoramic Mount Fuji views and an iconic Shinto shrine with a red torii gate. You can tour Lake Ashi by boat and see the shrine from the waters, as well as explore the Owakudani Valley sulphur springs.

The shrine is one of the most famous in the Kanto area and has connections with the legends of dragons, famous samurai, and travelers along the Tokaido Road. The shrine is located in a peaceful forest along the lake and has many red lanterns, gates, and buildings that lend to the peaceful beauty of a visit.

With just a day, the highlights that can easily be seen together are the Hakone Shrine, Lake Ashi, steaming vents of Owakudani, and the towns of Moto-Hakone, Yumoto, and Gora.

When heading to the Hakone Pirate Ship Togendai Port from Moto-Hakone Port, you can admire both the Heiwa no Torii and Mt Fuji. Covered with gleaming, white snow, Mt Fuji shines ever so brightly.

The one-way fare starts from ¥3600 for unreserved seating, but with a Japan Rail Pass you need only to pay ¥320 for the Hakone-Tozan line – easily done with a Suica or PASMO card (Limited Express trains require an extra ¥200 surcharge).Mount Fuji is notoriously shy and often cloud-bound, and you might find that Hakone National Park is the best place to appreciate it, but the peak can be climbed during July and August — the official climbing season.

Kawaguchiko gives one of the best views of Fuji in all of Japan, but the logistics of getting there and other activities are very limited. Hakone has good views of the mountain, but convenient connection to transportation and many other attractions in the area. Getting to each area is quite different.

There's plenty to do in Hakone. Take a dip in a hot spring, head to the mountains, walk around a stunning lake, and take in the views of Mt. Fuji. Hakone also has volcanic scenery, hiking trails, art museums, pirate ships, and bountiful history.

There is so much to see and do in the Hakone Region that we would definitely recommend that you plan to stay in Hakone for at least 1-2 nights to make the most of the local options. However, many people are on a tight timeframe when they visit Japan so plan to do a day trip to Hakone instead.
